Our parish began a lasting relationship with Fr. Dominic Kimengich from Kenya, Africa when he lived in our rectory for the summer ten years ago. He came to meet Mary Agnes McGrail, the woman who sponsored him through seminary. At that time, he was the rector of St. Joseph Junior Seminary in Molo, Kenya, and several parishioners here began to sponsor boys there.
Currently, Fr. Dominic is the rector of the Cathedral Parish in Nakuru, Kenya; and Vicar General for his diocese. In less than 40 years, the Nakuru diocese has grown from 10 to 39 parishes. Amid acute poverty, ignorance and the HIV/AIDS pandemic, the Church in Kenya works tirelessly to evangelize, eradicate poverty, establish schools and supply health care.
Here are several ways for St. Joseph parishioners to assist the Church in Kenya in her mission:
Sponsor students at St. Joseph Junior Seminary for boys, or several other Catholic schools for girls and boys
Provide financial assistance for building churches and chapels in new parishes
Help the Love and Hope Center care for people affected by AIDS
Help fund a conflict resolution program that works to ease tensions between different tribes
Assist a Cathedral program that provides food to destitute people, helps prostitutes change their lifestyle, and pays school fees for poor children
