Social Justice

The Social Justice Program is a combined effort of St Joseph and St. Thomas More Parishes.  We encourage all parish members to participate.  These programs though are not limited to parish members.  ALL ARE WELCOME!!!  No matter what church you attend, or even if you do not attend church.

St Joseph Packers
We are a group of parish members who gather every Monday at 8:30am in the Bennett Bldg. kitchen to re-package bulk food into individual servings.  The food is distributed by the Dream Center, our neighbor located nearby on Portage St.  We begin and end with prayer because the job comes in that way.  Anyone who wants a little of that joy is welcome to join us.  If you are interested, please contact St Joseph Parish Office at 269-343-6256.

Gospel Mission
On the 3rd Tuesday of each month from 4:30pm to 7pm, six people from St. Tom's and St. Joe's help make and serve meals.  Contact Phillip Dezern to sign up for just one time, or as long as you can.

Edison School
In a continuing effort to support the teachers at Edison Environmental Academy (across the street from our church's front door), who work with many economically disadvantaged students, we are providing items not covered by the school budget.  If you would like work towards Social Justice in our own neighborhood, for the kids in grades K - 5, please donate NEW hats, mittens, small size underwear and sox, and girl's leggings.  There is a box in the church vestibule for these donations.  Thank you for your prayers for all the families in the Edison Neighborhood, and thank you for donating whatever you are able.

Urban Alliance
UA distributes approximately 11 gallons of chili a week to homeless and underprivileged during their street ministry in Kalamazoo.  If you'd be willing to help,  please cook up a big batch of chili and freeze it in Zip-lok gallon bags.  You then may deliver the frozen chili to Urban Alliance's office at 1009 E. Stockbridge Ave, Suite 100 (basement of Stockbridge Methodist Church).   They are open 9am to 5pm.
Or, call Matt Lukas at 269-369-2439 to arrange pickup.

On March 22nd  thirteen students graduated in the ever Momentum Production Technician Academy (PTA) Graduation, a collaboration with KVCC, The Groves Technical College.  The collaboration was a pilot program and was considered a huge success.  So, we are offering it again!  The next Momentum PTA will begin on May 9th, 2016.  Open enrollments will be held on April 26, 27 and May 3, 4 at the Urban Alliance Stockbridge location from 9AM - 1PM.   See flyer for more details.

The social justice group is giving everyone an opportunity to impact the lives of all the occupants of the Open Doors / Cooper Street Apartments.  This community of families who live at the apartments is starting their own library, and they are looking for book donations.  These books are for any age reader, and they can be books of any subject.  As soon as we have enough books, we will send them over to the apartments and then start again!  As summer vacation starts, WOULDN’T IT BE GREAT TO HAVE BOOKS AVAILABLE FOR FAMILIES TO READ TOGETHER?  Or for children to read on their own? Or for adults to read on their own?  Let’s make a difference to this community!
